Taking a break from print in this post I had a chance to see some great live music this past week at a new and very cool venue in Times Square. Phil Lesh and Friends at the Nokia Theater are winding down their 10 nite run in New York City. Phil's new lineup of friends include his backbone, John Molo on drums. Jackie Greene and Larry Campbell are Phil's ax men and Steve Molitz fills out the sound on keyboards.
Running through a number of Grateful Dead staples, a bunch of rarely played gems and some new tunes, this 2.5 + hour performance was spectacular! Phil is playing with renewed energy and loving his new band. The sound was top notch with tight jams and highly creative improvisation.
Second set they played New Speedway Boogie which shouts, "One way or another this darkness got to give". I thought about all the wars going on, the greed of man and the senseless destruction happening all around us. Kharma through music like Phil's and the Grateful Dead help us to escape the realities of what our world is today. I believe in keeping the faith and dancing my blues away as often as I can. Keep it real, keep it tight.
